The Minister of Science and Innovation, Cristina Garmendia, announced an investment of 130 million euros to launch the new dark fiber network, RedIRIS Nova , which represents a change in the current circuit rental model and multiplies by 100 the capacities (from one to 100 Gigas).
The minister has participated in the 20th anniversary of RedIRIS, an advanced communication network of the Spanish academic and research community, and has expressed her satisfaction for "promoting the next stage" of this network, called RedIRIS Nova, and "with the that we will have our own capacity ", which is" fundamental ". Garmendia, who has opined that RedIRIS Nova will mean a change in the current circuit rental model and will contemplate an advance towards its own dark fiber model, has indicated that this new network will allow Spain "to participate in the development of the new generation of Internet". The minister explained that the investment of the 130 million is co-financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the corresponding contributions of the FEDER funds. This will allow, according to Garmendia, that in the 2008-2011 term, the new dark fiber network reaches all universities, public research organizations and research centers to which RedIRIS services, including all the unique scientific technological facilities in Spain.
