What is dark fiber ?
The definition of dark fiber is simple: it is called dark fiber to all that optical fiber that is not used . The optical fiber is formed by a very fine thread of transparent material, typically glass or plastic materials are used. It is used among other things as a means of transmitting data by which pulses of light are sent which represent the data to be transmitted. It is highly appreciated in telecommunications since fiber optic allows to transmit a large amount of data over long distances without being affected by electromagnetic interference. The fiber cables can contain a certain number of these: 16, 32, 64, etc. This means that when a telecommunications operator deploys its fiber optic network, it is common for it to oversize it, that is, cables include more fibers than what is actually going to be used. The reason is that if they did not do so and in the future it would be necessary to add more capacity to the network they would have to reopen the pipes and lay additional cables. So it is normal that within the fiber optic cable there are many fibers that are not used, that is why they are called dark fiber because they do not circulate light. The dark fiber has a certain commercial interest, since many companies that have offices very far from each other and need to intercommunicate these offices rent or directly buy dark fiber from telecommunications operators. For example it is known that Google has been dedicated to buy large amount of dark fiber at very affordable prices which at the time motivated that began to circulate all sorts of theories about what Google was planning to do with so much dark fiber , these theories ranged from interconnection of their data processing centers to world domination.
